Spitifire Acquisition Worldwide - How to Focus on Metrics That Matter

Owning Businesses Isn’t For Everyone – And That’s Why AdvisureIQ Works
I’ve owned a few companies in my time. Some were small and scrappy, and some were…not so small. One of the biggest was Spitfire Acquisition Worldwide, a global enterprise with more than 100 employees, manufacturing and engineering in England, distribution and sales in the U.S., and sales offices scattered around the world. It was a company with people from different cultures, languages, and ways of thinking about everything from engineering tolerances to how to run a meeting without losing your mind.
When I took the reins, it was clear we had a lot going for us, but we had no clarity. We had tons of activity – reports, dashboards, and meetings – but the results were a mixed bag. And when you’re running a company with a global footprint, mixed bags are expensive.
So, we did what any sensible owner would do: we stopped doing busywork and started transforming the business from the ground up.
Step One: Stop Measuring Everything That Doesn’t Matter
Here’s a secret nobody tells you about running a global company: most metrics are worthless. Spitfire had dashboards for days, but half of them didn’t move a needle. We ripped out the noise and focused only on decision-driving metrics. We needed to find answers to:
What numbers actually told us something could act on?
Which reports made people’s lives easier instead of confusing them or giving them something they needed to ignore?
How could we get everyone aligned without a 200-slide deck?
The answers weren’t sexy, but they worked. And yes, sometimes that meant telling people that their favorite report – yes, the one they literally printed and framed – was pointless.
At AdvisureIQ, we do the same thing for our clients. We focus on metrics matter: the metrics that can inform and change a decision. Everything else is just clutter.
Step Two: Build Repeatable Systems That Don’t Depend on You
Owning a company teaches you one thing fast: If it all depends on you, it’s not a business – it’s a job. At Spitfire, we built repeatable frameworks that made the company predictable and scalable. We implemented:
Standardized planning and forecasting assumptions.
Consistent operational and financial reviews.
Clear ownership for decisions.
The result: People knew exactly what to do, when to do it, and how their actions affected the bigger picture. Chaos became coordination, and coordination became results.
Now, at AdvisureIQ, that’s exactly what we do for our clients. Software alone doesn’t fix anything. People do. And they do it better when they have repeatable frameworks to guide their decisions.
Step Three: Translate Complexity Into Action
Managing a global footprint isn’t for the faint of heart. Missteps could happen because of different cultures, different ways of thinking, and different rules of the game.
At Spitfire, success required translating complexity into simple, actionable frameworks that worked everywhere – from England to the U.S. to markets halfway around the world.
This is the core of what we bring to AdvisureIQ clients: We don’t just drop in a system or a spreadsheet and hope it works. We take complexity, scale, and human behavior, and turn it into something your team can actually execute.
Step Four: Own It
Running a global business – and making it work – is humbling, exhausting, and occasionally hilarious. But it also teaches you lessons you can’t get from reading books or attending webinars. The biggest lesson: Ownership changes everything.
At AdvisureIQ, we bring that ownership mindset to every engagement. We are not just consultants showing up with recommendations. We are your operational co-pilot, your sanity check, and, yes, sometimes the people telling you which report isn’t worth your time.
